The Black Arts Movement was politically militant; Baraka described its goal as “to create an art, a literature that would fight for black people's liberation with as much intensity as Malcolm X our ‘Fire Prophet’ and the rest of the enraged masses who took to the streets.” WebBlackout poetry is a form of appropriation art where the artist finds a new poem in pre-existing text. This can be written word from books, magazines, or newspapers. Or anywhere else you can find usable text for that matter. I was first introduced to blackout poetry in 2011 when I took an altered books class as part of my Art Education program.
